I've got a personal belief that in this time, a story is not worth telling unless it is about something more than simply the characters and events within it. It must be a reflection of the world; say something about it. Its grounding in reality anchors the drama - or humor.
That doesn't mean it can't have a fun story and characters, of course.
I have three major projects right now, one is a post-apocalyptic story about escape, another is a steampunk story of sky pirates in the American Civil War era, and the last is about an occultist who gets what he wants the most.
I'm not going to post those yet. They are full-length novels, and while I may post them piece-meal later, I'm going to start with two short stories.
One is serious; the other is not. I'm quite sure you can figure out which.
